What Has Michelle Obama Been Up To?

Barack Obama formally left office just under a year ago when Donald Trump had his inauguration. Yes, I know it seems like a lifetime ago! So much has happened in the world since Barack, Michelle, Sasha and Malia - and we can't forget the family dogs Bo and Sunny - left the White House. But was has Michelle Obama been up to since?

The former first lady never shied away from taking initiative and launching campaigns to help better people's lives. She's not only a fashion icon who absolutely stuns in African print, she's an activist and advocate, and consistent champion of the people.

While her husband was in office, Michelle got to work, launching the 'Let's Move' initiative, to help children and their families get exercising and get healthier. Here she is celebrating seven years since it launched.

Growing up disadvantaged in the South Side of Chicago, and rising to become not only the first in her family to go to college but an Ivy League-educated lawyer, education has always been dear to the former FLOTUS' heart. She regularly goes on tours of schools to give speeches and inspire young students to empower themselves through education.

The potential of education to really change lives is at the heart of Michelle's efforts. She has launched the Reach Higher initiative since she left the White House to encourage students to continue their education past high school.

Through bringing in big names to help promote events like 'College Signing Day', Michelle hopes to inspire young people to make more of themselves, and go wherever their skills can take them.

Reach Higher has a network of school counsellors as well as policy experts and professionals working in college access to make these goals a reality. The website says "The Reach Higher Initiative is Former First Lady Michelle Obama's effort to inspire every student in the U.S. to take charge of their future by completing education past high school, whether at a professional training programme, a community college, or a four-year college or university."

Since 2015, Michelle Obama has been involved in 'Better Make Room', which has since evolved into a wider campaign which supports the original Reach Higher initiative. It aims to give young people the information they need to "get an education, [and] imagine a better future."

These issues are so dear to her heart, you can tell. She shows no signs of stopping, and will continue to stand up for children for many years to come!
