Project Runway Is Coming To South Africa And It's A Gamechanger

The fashion industry is the perfect choice for reality TV. Hit shows like 'America's Next Top Model' and 'Project Runway' let us go behind the scenes, showing a glimpse of what really goes into putting together the outfits and campaigns that we all know and love.

All too often though, a lot of these shows look the same. They are set in western countries, usually with most models of the same ethnicity, and similar styles of clothing.

What if African designers were given a chance to shine?

Well the wait is over - well almost! Later this year, South Africa is going to air its own version of 'Project Runway' and it's seriously a game changer.

'Project Runway South Africa' opened for entries in March and is coming to Mzanji Magic, channel 161 on DSTV in July.

While the show will follow the original format, bringing together aspiring designers and watching them craft their creations, it will bring a long awaited touch of flavour to the show!

'Project Runway SA' will bring together 12 aspiring fashion designers together for a 6 week competition. Each week will see the contestants compete in fashion challenges, judged by a panel of judges, model and media personality Noni Gasa and fashion designer Rahim Rawjee. Gert-Johan Coetzee, also a fashion designer, will serve as a mentor.

As African fashion has continued to grow in prominence across the world, the South African iteration of 'Project Runway' will likely build on this, and further help to promote designers and styles from the continent.

The show held an exclusive reveal party to introduce their contestants, but are still tight-lipped about who the host will be. Whoever it is, 'Project Runway SA' is definitely not something to miss!

Are you excited for 'Project Runway SA'? Who would you like to be the host? Are there any other African countries you think should get their own version of 'Project Runway'?
