Interview with Entrepeneur Prisca Morse, Supertress hair extensions
"I studied finance. I worked in Finance. I hated finance.
I was raised in a very traditional African family. I was taught that jobs in finance was the only way to empower yourself as a young African woman. So I took my parents advice and went to university and studied finance. Once leaving university I gained employment in finance.
I noticed that no matter how hard I worked I never could move up in the company that I worked for. I would complete task faster than anyone else in the office and always remained positive and polite. My manager would continually tell me what a great job I was doing. But I found that other people with less work ethic than me but better social connections within the management team were speeding pass me up the corporate ladder. While I stayed at the bottom. Unsurprisingly, I did not feel empowered. I felt in enslaved.
Was this unfair? Yes. Was this personal? Yes. Did I care? No. I secretly knew that this wasn’t my world. Nor did I want it to be my world.
Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to learn how to do hair. When woke up in the morning the first thing on my mind was what hairstyle I was going to have today. I just love hair. But in my family being a hairdresser was seen as low status careers. So after years of unhappiness in finance I realised that I am living a life without purpose. I felt as though I had wasted my life by following an African theory that the corporate world would better myself and I would become a respected African woman if I was in the corporate world. This was not true.
I started my salon 3 years ago and I have never felt more empowered not only because I am following my dreams but because I have the power over my own success.
One scrap of advice I would give anyone who feels trapped in their careers or feels torn between what they want or what they feel they should want."
Empowerment only comes from passion for what you do. Hard work is never enough without passion, courage and taking the risk to get what you want out of life. This is the only way you can empower yourself.
