The Brixton Soup Kitchen was founded by Solomon Smith. Solomon is a very special person as his passion started when he was only 12 years old. On his way home from school each day he noticed that there was a mass of homeless people in his area. His mother, coming from a large Caribbean family, always cooked a little too much each day. Solomon decided he would take the leftovers and give them to the homeless each day. When his mother discovered what he was doing, she was so proud and his passion began.
When Solomon studied at University he took a placement at a homeless shelter in Lewisham. What was supposed to be a three month placement turned out to be a seven year journey. When he finished his studies he found himself with a lot of energy and spare time. He decided that he wanted to help his local community in the heart of Brixton, London. Solomon used his own money to start the charity and used no social media, instead opting for good old-fashioned word of mouth. People began to hear about what he was doing and on the first day 30 homeless people turned up!
On 1st January 2013, the Brixton Soup Kitchen was born!
The Brixton Soup Kitchen is a place where the homeless, vulnerable and even lonely people can come to receive support, life skills, housing information and some home cooked food with a hint of spice! This charity is vital in providing support in the community of Brixton.
The volunteers include school children and local families. The charity relies heavily on donations and volunteers to continue its work. Only a few pounds can feed so many this Christmas.
Solomon Smith is one of the most passionate founders we have come across when searching for ways to help this Christmas. We are so happy we have found the Brixton Soup Kitchen as we can really make a significant difference!
What is Solomon Smith's plan for the future?
"My plan is to develop the Brixton Soup Kitchen into a larger community. We want the charity to be helping long after I am gone."
