Starting with a touching tribute to her late father Joe Jackson who passed away last week, the seminal songstress brought her A-game to the main stage at the New Orleans festival.
In honor of the incredible Janet Jackson, let's take a look at the times she proved that she is an indeniable icon.
When she redefined the chair in 'Miss You Much'
Janet shook the table back in 1989. Spending a month at number one, we can't help but think the music video's simply incredible choreography was a major reason for this. Miss Jackson and her back-up dancers took a seat, performing the iconic 'Chair Dance' - which we do not advise you try at home. Serious skills!
When she served serious space sibling ferocity with Michael in 'Scream'
There's almost no limit to the amount of talent in the Jackson family! In '95, Janet teamed up with older brother Michael for a show-stopping space spectacular. The music video for the fierce and catchy 'Scream' was claimed to be most expensive ever made at the time, costing a whopping $7m! Janet and Michael slayed their routine, leading to the video winning a Grammy and critical acclaim. Jackson siblings unite!
The time she defended Mariah Carey
In a world where people - especially women - are constantly pitted against each other, in no place is this more prevalent than the music and entertainment industry. It was so heartening to see Janet Jackson come to the defence of fellow songstress Mariah Carey when she was criticized for 'stealing' a film role that Janet was no longer able to take due to scheduling conflicts. This is what unity looks like!
When 'Rhythm Nation' ended national anthems
The 1989 hit had 'The Star Spangled-Banner' quaking. 'God Save The Queen' was shook. Janet came through with the only anthem we need, and got everyone pledging their hearts to the 'Rhythm Nation'. The black and white setting, the black military garb, the ode to harmony and a world free of color lines and social injustice, 'Rhythm Nation' cemented itself as a powerful song, and with it Janet's icon status.
When she starred alongside Tupac and rocked iconic braids
Janet Jackson is a performer in all ways. When she isn't dancing up a storm or singing her heart out, Janet loves to act. She starred next to fellow musician Tupac in 1993's 'Poetic Justice' and scored another number one single with soundtrack song 'Again', which was also nominated for an Oscar. How could we forget her incredible box braids which boosted the look back to popularity?
